Fallout 3 Taking Fire Down Under

Remember Duke Nukem'? Maybe it was before your time, but perhaps you remember Mortal Combat, or maybe Doom, or Quake. How about Manhunt? Surely you know Grand Theft Auto III. So right about now you're asking what do these games have in common. At one point in time, each one of these video games along with countless others, came under the spotlight for having controversial material like drugs, sexual content, and graphic violence.
Another game that has recently come under attack is Fallout 3. This game was in the news when it was intially banned by the Australian Equivalent to the ESRB called the Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC). Fallout 3, produced by Bethesda Studios, takes place in a post apocalyptic world following a nuclear war. The player controls the protagonist called the Vault Dweller, and the story follows the Vault Dweller's search after his/her father disappears into the Wastelands. According to Gamespot Australia, Fallout 3 was refused classification by the OFLC, essentially banning it. The most compelling reason behind the ban was the realistic representation of drug usage. During gameplay the protagonist can use a variety of drugs and take them in a variety of ways, such as a crack pipe, syringes, and tablets. Each drug has its own benefits and consequences. To accommodate the OFLC, the Australian distributer for Fallout 3 has toned down the positive and negative effects of drug usage during gameplay. Fallout 3 has been resubmitted for review and the OFLC has approved giving the game a Mature rating. It is worth noting that the OFLC banned the game only due to the drug usage and not the violence. So to the joy of the fans of the Fallout 3 in Australia, Fallout 3 has avoided the banhammer. It has a release date of October 28, 2008.
