Bungie Isn't Done Yet: Recon
Remember when I said I was giddy? Well, I'm giddy again and nothing in this world could describe how giddy I am. Not even the Dark Knight, Halo 2, or the Beanie Babies combined could match how giddy I am. Suffice to say I'm giddy.... Bungie released a new trailer of their newest project, called Halo 3: Recon.
Bungie finally came out of the closet (not that closet) ... and officially announced their new game. In an earlier post, I surmised that the game was about the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers or Hell Jumpers, not Master Chief, the original Halo series protagonist. It's hard not to say I told you so. But one of the things I was wrong about was the the gameplay. In this game you play as a lone soldier and not apart of a squad.
But don't worry Bungie fans, this game will not be a complete deviation from the Halo gameplay we've all come to know and love. But what does that mean to us... the loyal fans of Bungie? Well, it means no more fighting as Master Chief, the invincible one man army. It also means no more energy shields, and no more personal beat downs on Brutes. Unlike the Master Chief, ODST's are more fragile and less capable than Master Chief. As Microsoft puts it, players will have to rely more on cunning and stealth. I'm all for that. Instead of plain brute strength, wit will be employed in this upcoming game. I think it will be interesting to see what kind of situations the main character will be put in, and how we will react we won't have the invincibility of Master Chief. Some of things that will be the same are Forge and the four player co-op. Halo 3: Recon will have its own achievements, and a new set of Halo 3 multiplayer maps. Unfortunately, we won't be able to play as ODST's in multiplayer :'(
According to IGN, this game will mostly take place on Earth. One location we know for sure is the city of New Mombasa, featured in Halo 2 and 3. Halo 3: Recon supposedly takes place in between Halo 2 and 3, so while Master Chief is hopping all over the galaxy, the lone protagonist of Halo 3: Recon is most likely stuck on earth.
Another interesting thing to consider is the way this game relates to Halo 3. In a press release, Microsoft noted that this will be a stand alone game. Halo 3 will not be needed to play, but Halo 3 players will probably get more out of this than someone who just picked up a controller and started playing this.
While this trailer answered a few questions, it created many more. What kind of gameplay can we expect? New weapons? New Vehicles? What is compelling me to buy this besides a new story in the Halo Universe? Who is this new protagonist? And is he as cuddly and as lovable as our beloved Master Chief? These questions will have to wait until we get closer to Fall 2009.
Bottomline: I'm looking forward to this game and new information as it arises, but until then I will just have to be satisfied playing Fable II and Gears of War 2.
