Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams
Ever heard of Ayn Rand? Well give yourself a pat on the back. You are one of the select few video gamers who do know. Well for those of you who don't know who she is, here's the rundown... Ayn Rand was a Russian-American novelist, philosopher, and screenwriter who penned, the famous novels “The Fountainhead” and “Atlas Shrugged”. She also developed the philosophical idea of Objectivism.
So now this is where you would say, “What the crap? You're writing on the wrong blog, you moron! This has nothing to do with video games!”
And that's where I would say, “I must politely disagree with you sir (or in a rare event that a female visits our blog, madam), Ayn Rand has much to do with video games.”
Rand's works, especially Atlas Shrugged had a great influence on the story of the popular 2007 video game, Bioshock by 2K Boston. As you play the game it is easy to see her influence on the characters, settings, and story of Bioshock. And with the success of Bioshock its only natural that they make a sequel. For those of you who haven't played Bioshock, it is first person shooter, horror, similar to the Gears of War franchise. The video game follows the experiences of crash survivor as he makes his way through the former utopian now dystopian city of Rapture. I highly recommend this game.
Bioshock was originally released for the Xbox 360 and was later ported over to the Playstation 3. So why bring up Bioshock now? Well, Bioshock fans were treated to a little surprise at the end of the Playstation 3 version with a teaser trailer for Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams. The trailer displays “Atlantic Coast” both a reference to the original Bioshock, and the location of the trailer. The trailer then cuts to a young woman holding an improvised doll, a reference to the “little sisters” of the first Bioshock. The camera pans back to reveal that she is standing on a beach, and as the camera moves back, city buildings emerge from the sand. The trailer ends with the Bioshock logo and the subtitle “Sea of Dreams”. The question has arisen if Bioshock 2 will be a prequel or a sequel. Well, since it looks like the girl is a grown up version of a “little sister”
Long have there been rumors about the Bioshock sequel, but this is the first look at Bioshock 2
Bottomline: Bioshock is a compelling video game, and I am looking forward to the sequel.
